Whitespace vs Claude: AI built for wholesale distribution, or a general assistant you set up yourself

Whitespace gives wholesalers and distributors AI that runs inventory replenishment and does other work. Claude, from Anthropic, is a general-purpose AI assistant. A distributor can get real work out of Claude, but the team has to connect the data sources, set up their own guidelines for the AI (e.g., interpreting the data), write and test the workflows, and manage all of that. Whitespace does the distribution work you would use Claude for, and more, with your data, knowledge and workflows already set up.

Claude can do some distribution work, but your team has to set it up and run it

Many owners already use Claude to read a contract, summarise a sales report or draft a supplier email. Distribution work needs more.

To build a reorder in Claude, someone exports stock, sales and open POs from the ERP, explains the MOQs and lead times, writes the prompt, checks the answer, and does it all again next week. Claude's memory helps, but it is not sufficient for wholesale work because of all the nuance. For example, the forecast calls for 200 units, but 180 are for one customer on credit hold, so the order should cover only the demand you can ship.

Claude is a general assistant for general-purpose work

As of October 2026, Claude does several things well:

  • Reasoning and writing. It reads long documents, analyses the files you upload and drafts clear text.
  • Connectors. More than 1,000 connectors link it to apps such as Gmail, Microsoft 365, Slack and HubSpot. Major ERPs are not among Anthropic's listed connectors.
  • Memory and projects. It remembers context across chats, and each project keeps its own files, instructions and memory.
  • Building your own tools. Paid plans include Claude Code, which a technical person can use to build custom workflows.

Whitespace comes ready for distribution work, with your data, knowledge and workflows set up

Whitespace solves the problem with state-of-the-art AI capabilities. It is built for wholesale distribution, and some of what it does, you can't do in Claude at all:

  • Semantic layer and self-updating memory. A semantic layer maps how your business uses its data, from product groups to reorder triggers. The memory learns what your team knows that no field records, such as a supplier who accepts 300 against an MOQ of 500, and your team reviews what it shares.
  • Workflow products and agents. Replenishment comes ready to run, with AI agents that do the work and your team approving it.
  • Pre-built connectors and agent playbooks. It connects to your ERP, email, WMS, CRM and website, and its playbooks tell the agents how distribution work gets done.

Whitespace is also model agnostic. It works with leading AI models, Claude models included, and manages the token costs for you. We charge a monthly subscription for our software, not per token. We offer flexible pricing plans to ensure you pay according to the ROI.

Example: with replenishment, the difference is who does the setup and who runs each cycle

If you don't have a well set up, repeatable operation yet, stick with Claude

Figure out how your business runs before you worry about the AI.

When Claude is the better choice:

  • Your processes are still changing week to week.
  • Most of your AI work is one-off, such as reading a contract or drafting a letter.
  • You have a technical person who wants to build and maintain your own workflows.

When Whitespace is the better choice:

  • You run a repeatable operation, such as weekly replenishment across thousands of SKUs.
  • You want the work done every cycle without your team setting it up and running it.
  • You want AI that already knows how your suppliers, customers and products fit together.

A UK wholesaler's owner moved from asking Claude questions to having Whitespace do the work

The owner of a UK wholesaler was a keen AI user:

"I was already using ChatGPT and Claude quite a bit."

But the AI didn't know the business. Years of data sat in the ERP, and the team exported it to spreadsheets to get answers.

"Whitespace does a lot more in the background than Claude. It's streamlined to our business, as opposed to just asking one-off queries."

Owner, UK wholesaler

Whitespace connected their ERP, CRM and email, and its semantic layer learned how the business runs. It now runs their reorder review, stock allocation, sample analysis and stock reconciliation. It also sends a daily brief of actions, such as delay emails when a mill runs late.

"Whitespace is a miracle. It's a game changer to our business. The AI develops as it learns our business and moulds to our data."
